25 Feb 08 - Birmingham Chamber Virtual Worlds Event

Free Seminar: Exploring real business opportunities in a virtual world

A virtual world, such as the much-publicised `Second Life`, is a three dimensional computer generated space available over the internet. It is a place where individuals can learn more about your organisation, visit your offices, speak to you and your colleagues, attend meetings, workshops, product launches and see samples of your work.

This free seminar is at aimed anyone interested in gaining an understanding of the virtual world and its benefits. You do not have to have any knowledge of virtual worlds to attend this event, however if you have an interest in this new technology this seminar will present a good opportunity for you to meet with individuals who are working in this exciting medium.

You will hear from two Midlands-based companies who are using virtual worlds. Our first speaker, David Burden has been involved in virtual worlds since the mid 1990s and has been in Second Life since 2004. He founded Daden, a Virtual Worlds and Information 2.0 Consultancy in 2004. Daden Limited helps businesses and organisations explore the social and commercial potential of virtual worlds. David also has a keen interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Daden have an AI platform for use both in Second Life and on the web.

Our second speaker is Jerry Foss, a senior lecturer in Media Technologies and Distributing Computing in the Interactive Media Centre at the Technology Innovation Centre at Birmingham City University. His research interests have been focused on distributed collaborative virtual environments and broadband media distribution services and technologies. He will be talking about how Birmingham City University is using Second Life to raise its profile.

Our third speaker is Paul Turner from the company 'The Walk In Web' which he formed in 2007 with Jackie Arriola after they had been offering Internet services for nine years under the name Atherstoneweb Ltd. The Walk In Web is currently building a virtual version of Atherstone in North Warwickshire and a virtual Business Resource Centre in Second Life as part of the Science City Project.

Virtual Worlds are being used by business of all sizes from SMEs to global brands and it is predicted that by the end of 2011 80 percent of active internet users will have a virtual presence on line.
