Experience

Here is just some of the work that we've done. Give us a call if you'd like to talk through them in more detail.

PREVIEW - Problem Based Learning in SL   preview logo   PREVIEW is a JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee - UK Government Agency) funded project looking at problem based learning with virtual worlds - specifically Second Life. The PREVIEW team includes the University of Coventry, St Georges University Of London medical school and Daden Limited - a virtual worlds agency. Daden are leading the technical effort to build a player for an electronic Virtual Patient (EVP) based on the Medbiquitous Virtual Patient (MVP) XML standard within Second Life in order to train health and care professionals in a virtual world using problem based learning techniques. Whilst initially focussed on medical topics them aim is that the player can be used in any PBL field. The Player will take full advantage of 3D objects within a virtual world, and include non-player-character (NPC) avatar interaction.

For Birmingham City University we have re-created their Millennium Point campus - a huge modern building close to Birmingham's city centre. The building though is only the backdrop for the training courses which will be run using the facility. The first course is aimed at training media students in Health and Safety by having them conduct virtual location scouting exercises, setting up film equipment both inside and outside the building and assessing each location for both film and safety issues. Having proven the concept by comparing real and virtual scouting exercises we can then hopefully create virtual environments for the students which it would be impractical to have them use in real teaching due to cost, risk or time constraints.
Financial Services Company   floating island   For this client we redeveloped an entire sim and several floating islands to create a number of areas of interest - including a maze and a lovely pastoral area of raised beds, butterflies and swings. We then created a huge geodesic structure to hold examples of the clients products, each linked back to the relevant page on the clients web site.
Serious Games Institute in Second Life   sgi building   The Serious Games Institute is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in the global Serious Games Industry. We provided high level advice and then supported a local builder in creating the SGI buiding in SL - an exact copy of the real building. We then fitted out the building with media and tracking systems and are currently working on an automated receptionist and some mixed-reality projects for SGI. Watch this space!
Coventry University in Second Life   coventry university   We helped Coventry University get set up in Second Life. We provided consulting support to their senior staff, and skills training and support to a team of student builders. As a result the University now has a cadre of skilled builders to move faculty projects forward.
Charity Event in Second Life   rnd07   We provided informal pro-bono support to a major UK charity which wanted to bring its big biennial event into Second Life in March 07. We developed sales and donation tracking software, and helped developed a copyable vendor, as well as providing support and advice for marketing, and hosting a party on the big day itself.
Digital Futures in Second Life   digital futures build   Digital Futures was developed for Media Training Northwest, a Government and media industry initiative to encourage old media types to embrace new media. The virtual centre provides a place to hold video and other educational and training resources, a place to hold networking events and virtual seminars, and booths, gallery and exhibition space where media companies can show their wares.
Lillian - A virtual librarian   lillian screenshot   Lillian was developed for the Talis Mashing Up The Library Competition. She combines our Discourse natural language speech system with Oddcast's avatars and web services from Talis, Amazon and OCLC. Not only can she tell you if a library has a book but she can also give you a synopsis, reviews, and book recommendations. We are currently seeing if we can find her a job at the Second Life virtual library - as well as looking for real-world libraries for her to work in.
Charlotte - A Talking TV Guide   charlotte screenshot   Charlotte was developed as part of BBC Backstage. She uses our Discourse natural language engine to provide simple access to the BBC TV listings, using the BBC's web service. She can reply to questions like "what is on telly tonight", "What is on BBC1 on friday evening" and "when is Spooks on this week". She could front any scheduling service which provides a web services or RSS interface, and we are currently looking at applications for her in helping visually impaired users.
ITQ - Internal and Stakeholder Communications   itq logo   Something non-technical for a change. We've been working with the UK Government's Learning and Skills Council to help launch the new ITQ IT user qualification. In particular we've used our analysis and presentation skills to make complex funding information available in an easy to digest form for a varied group of stakeholders.
Aira - Information and Search   aira screenshot   Aira was designed for business consultancy One Corp's Atlas Intelligence project. Not only does she provide general infromation about Atlas Intelligence but she can also search their database of business reports and recommend titles to users based on their interests.
Toby - A Virtual Marketeer   toby screenshot   We designed Toby to act as a virtual marketing assistant for Your Online Marketing Agency. Toby provides visitors to their web site with an informative and eye-catching introduction to their services.

The book is due for publication in late 2004, and the model allows people to explore many sustainability and environmental issues. We are keen to find other outlets for this work. Let us know if you have a sustainability project that could benefit from this work.
